Determining the 12 Palaces of Polaris Astrology

<< PREVIOUS PAGE Polaris Astrology Chart Basic

Order of the 12 Palaces

In Polaris astrology, there are 12 palaces. Each palace is associated with one earth branch and represents a particular aspect of one's life.

The order of the 12 palaces on the Polaris astrology chart is fixed, it is the same for everyone. It starts with the Life Palace, then each subsequent palaces are counter clockwisely distributed on to the chart. The last palace is the Parent Palace. However, the initial point on the chart for the 12 Palace is different for each person.

The Order of the 12 Palaces
1 Life Palace 2 Sibling Palace 3 Spouse Palace 4 Children Palace 5 Wealth Palace 6 Health Palace
7 Journey Palace 8 Friend Palace 9 Career Palace 10 Estate Palace 11 Pleasure Palace 12 Parent Palace

Determining the Life Palace (The initial point for the 12 palaces)

  1. Locate the Lunar birth month on the chart. Each lunar month is associated with a particular earth branch. The locations for the lunar months and earth branches on the chart are fixed and cannot be changed. (please refer to the chart below)
  2. Assume the birth month is Zi 子 (Zi is the name of the first shi chen, each shi chen is two hours).
  3. Count counter clockwise starting from Zi (in the birth month box on the chart) to birth shi chen (birth hour). Remember, each shi chen is two hours. On the chart, each box is worth two hours. The last shi chen (last box) at which the count has stopped is the Life Palace.
Earth branches and corresponding Lunar months
Si 4 Wu 5 Wei 6 Shen 7
Chen 3 You 8
Mao 2 Xu 9
Yin 1 Chou 12 Zi 11 Hai 10

Example 1: Person born on the 8th lunar month at 8:28am. Assume the lunar month 8 is Zi and count counter clockwise all the way to the birth shi chen which is Chen located at Si (Birth shi chen for 8:am is Chen 辰.) The ending location Si 巳 is the Life Palace.

If you were confused by the above example, here is an easier way. Use the 12 animals instead of using earth branches. It is easier to remember especially for non Chinese speaker. The cycle of the 12 Animals begins at Rat, rotates clockwise and ends on Pig.

  1. Locate the Lunar birth month on the chart.
  2. Count counter clockwise starting at 11:00pm until birth hour. Always start counting at 11:00pm. (11:pm is the beginning of the cycle of earth branches) Use birth hour only and drop the minutes. Each box is worth two hours. The last box which the count ended with birth hour is the Life palace.

Note: Do not be confused by the lunar month number and the earth branch number. Each earth branch number is always two greater then the corresponding lunar month. For Example, the eighth earth branch is Wei the Goat. The corresponding lunar month number is six (8-2=6). Yin the tiger is the third earth branch, its corresponding lunar month is one, which is the beginning of Chinese new year (3-2=1). For more information please refer to Chinese Calendar Basic

Determining the Remaining 11 Palaces.

Once the Life palace is located, determining the Remaining 11 palaces is easy. The subsequent palaces encircle the chart in a counter clockwise direction, and always follow the same order as indicated above.

Determining the Body Palaces (the 13th palace)

Straightly speaking there are 13 palaces if the Body palace was included. Body palace shares its palace (its location) with one of other 12 palaces. Although many Polaris astrologers believe that the Body Palace has great significance over a person's life, it is being omitted by some. I think the reason may be that there is not enough literature describing the Body palace.

The Body palace is the opposite of the Life palace. It is determined by:

  1. Locate the birth month on the chart.
  2. Assume the the birth month as 11:00 pm (the first earth branch)
  3. Count clockwise from 11:00 pm to the birth hour. The last box which ended with the birth hour is the Body palace.

Note: The concept of counter clockwise and clockwise is extremely important, it is the concept of yin and yang.
